The second WTF Bikexplorers Summit – four days of clinics, rides, discussions, campfires, and gear testing – will take place this August 15-18 in Verona, Oregon. The goal of the summit is to support, celebrate, and connect Women, Trans, Femme, non-binary, and genderqueer cyclists who use their bicycles to explore in a way that feels empowering and healing. See five takeaways from last year’s event here.
The organizers recognize that living the bike life isn’t as free and easy as the internet makes it seem, and they’re offering scholarships for five members of their community who encounter the structural inequalities that can get in the way of getting outside and exploring the world by bike.
The WTF Bikexplorers scholarships are named after SJ Brooks, who was the founder of the Seattle chapter of Friends on Bikes, a cycling group that fosters a community for women, trans, femme and non-binary people of color who love riding bikes. On May 19th, 2018, SJ was fatally attacked while biking outside of Seattle. SJ’s death is a huge loss to the cycling community. They were a positive light who worked tirelessly to create change.
All five scholarships include:
- Summit ticket, reserved campsite at Vernonia Springs, and all meals
- $600 travel stipend
- Original Parts from SimWorks
- Bags from Ortlieb and Revelate Designs
- Gear from Big Agnes
- 1 pair of Bedrock Sandals
- 1 compression dry sack from Sea to Summit
- 1 year premium subscription to Ride with GPS
- Awesome WTF Bikexplorers swag
In addition, three recipients will receive either a Sequoia, Diverge E5 Elite, or a Chisel Comp from Specialized Bicycles, based on their need.
The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm PT on Friday, April 12th. Indigenous, Queer, Two Spirit, Black, Trans and/or People of Color are strongly encouraged to apply. Visit the SJ Brooks Bikexplorers Scholarship page for complete details.
